Chapter 18

Kephas

I felt my heart quicken at the thought that my bond with Annie might be restored. We hadn’t come to a conclusion yet, but I felt like we were drawing close. After we’d gone over a few things, we had a short list of what might be required.

A formal agreement.

A mutual desire to be connected as equals.

A kiss. There had been a lot of discussion around this, about emotions as well. Apparently there had been a fair amount of intimacy between Annie and Aethan, and Annie and Del in recent times.

“I’d felt something when we kissed,” she said to Del. “When we were saying goodbye on the beach, and you were going off to your home and Janice and I were headed to Masia. I think it may have been something connected to bonding.”

Her expression softened and I could see her love for him in her eyes. It was a look she’d shared with us all at one point or another.

“I think perhaps that kiss was our purest, the closest we’d gotten to the state we needed to be in to bond,” she continued. “Something about giving of yourself to the other without restrictions or limits. Only love.”

“Yeah,” Aethan murmured. “In all the turmoil and pain of the last few days. I think we’ve forgotten what forged our bond. It was love. Love for you and for each other. We’ve had so much else on our minds…” He glanced at Rion and his expression turned glum.

The erinai slept peacefully. I was sorry I’d had to hit him to get him to finally rest. It had been one of the most painful things I’d ever done, but I didn’t think he would have stopped otherwise. He’d been beyond reason and I could only hope when he woke he’d be calmer.

I turned my attention to the sea and watched the dark waves lap against the shore in the distance. Stone Titan’s had exceptional dark vision and I could see out over the waves, and the sea beyond, especially with the stars out. I couldn’t look at the others for a moment. They had endured so much, while I…

Hera had been able to hurt me. She’d borrowed my own power and become strong enough to hit me so it would hurt, but that hadn’t really done that much. There’d been bruises, but not much more. She’d tried using tools on me, but with how durable I was in that world, and the force she’d needed, those tools usually broke before my skin did.

She’d given up on me after a while, simply leaving me in isolation, which in itself wasn’t great because I could occasionally hear the screams of Aethan and Rion, and knew they were probably taking the brunt of her frustration because I hadn’t provided any outlet for the mad goddess. I hadn’t had it half as bad as they did and my heart hurt with guilt about that.

“Keph?”

I turned back at Annie’s voice.

“Are you okay?”

I raised a brow. “What does that mean? Okay?” I asked.
